HistoryEdit

Rhythm and Blues, often time abbreviated R&B, is a genre of music that typically has an African American fan base. Believed to have originated in the 40's after World War 2, R&B was a term coined by record labels to describe "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat". The influx of young African Americans migrating from the rural poorer parts of the country to city created a demand for a different style of music. R&B was also able to capture the ears of young white audiences and led directly to the creation of rock and roll.

Atlanta grew to be the hub of R&B and was home of some of the most famous venues like the Royal Peacock and the 81 Theater. Atlanta was also the home of the first black owned radio stations in 1949, which proved to be an immediate success. A few years later WAOK was purchased by well Known DJ Zenas "Daddy" Sears , and became the first integrated radio station with an R&B format.

R&B continued to flourish through out the years changing from one generation to the next. During the 1970's R&B was used as a general term for soul and funk. R&B began to incorporate other forms of music such as funk, pop, hip hop, and dance, and collectively became known as Contemporary R&B.
